Jesus walked on the water, and i know that it’s true;
but sometimes i think that ol’ preacher man would like to do a little walking, too.

i really didn’t want to write about this, but i think i must. i’m especially verbose today, perhaps nervous about my upcoming interview…

it’s probably more due to people of james dobson’s ilk that tempt me to despise certain groups of evangelicals.
but i don’t.
there’s an evangelical manifesto (see my post here) that speaks more to my beliefs, and if dobson doesn’t think they speak to his, fine.
he can go to he-…
uh, sorry … i’m trying to remain civil.
and Christ-like.
but even He had to clear the temple a couple of times.
and, not surprisingly, dobson couldn’t remain Christ-like in the quotes in the article attributed to him:
calling obama a ‘fruitcake’ in his views on the constitution;
misrepresenting obama’s characterization of the divergent beliefs among people like dobson and al sharpton;
specifically avoiding the bloody deaths of his continually supported war in iraq and denouncing obama’s stance on abortion;
ignoring obama’s correct statements about the radical nature of the sermon on the mount and how it could never be used in our world as the basis of a government;
repeatedly in the past referencing passages from leviticus as declaring homosexuality an ‘abomination to God,’ yet saying obama is dragging scripture ‘through the gutter’ in his references to the same book;
and ignoring the fact that america is a pluralistic country that strives for moral decency but can never establish a religion – which, dobson might note, is in the constitution.
perhaps jimmy d. was eating fruitcake at the time and missed that part.
and whoever minnery is – thankfully, i’m not that familiar with him, but i expect his name has something to do with ‘minion’ – implies that there’s only one way to interpret scripture, which totally disregards all of Christian history, implying that, after 2000 years, he and jimmy d. have effectively solved all the differences in Christian doctrine.
hallelujah. where have they been all this time? seated at the right hand of the Father?
i think their next act is walking on water.
of course, they’ve got to finish walking all over obama, mccain, and all their Christian brethren, first.

Dobson doesn’t have a dog in this hunt. He won’t vote for McCain nor Obama. But he’s got bigger issues than that, if we go by what he says on his own website:
Meanwhile, the boy’s father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son’s maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.
Focus on the family indeed!
yeah, i wonder what plans dobson has. even the bible says to respect the authorities as they are appointed by God – i wonder how dobson’s holding-my-breath-til-i-turn-blue-and-taking-my-ball-and-going-home attitude fits in with that.
i don’t see him backing bob barr.
i still think newt’s going to get in the race.

Dobson’s decision to sit out this election to demonstrate the power of evangelical righties to influence the election is bad timing, because there is a definite shift of evangelicals to the left, particularly on environmental issues.
It should be noted that Dobson is not really a christian, he’s a religious moralist, but definitely not a Christian by any stretch of the imagination…which is not something I relish saying, but as a caution to others.
Oh sure, he likes to talk the walk, but when it comes to walking the talk…yeah, he’d rather sit on the front porch and sip lemonade telling everyone else how to do it.
