today’s random thoughts:

george carlin passed away over the weekend at age 71.

i was going to post a link to a youtube video where he gives his ‘religion is bullsh-t’ routine, but the language was a little too colorful, and this is a family blog. i’ve always wondered what motivates angry atheists. is it fear that they’re wrong? a desire to be told they’re right? (that’s something i can empathize with…)

i mentioned to someone in an email yesterday how, even though he was a comedian, i hardly ever remember him smiling, except as part of routine where the expression meant, ‘could people really be so stupid?’.

anyway, i was more of a cheech and chong fan. i can still quote almost the entire los chochinos album:

“hey there swinging bachelors:
tired of the steady drip, drip, drip of gonorreah?
well then peter rooter may be just what you’re looking for.”

jingle:
“peter rooter, that’s the name,
you just flush your troubles down the drain -
rotten peter, rotten peter, rotten peter…”

ok, this was a family blog…

hillary is asking for $20 million in contributions from her faithful. apparently she has to pay it off by the convention or she can only collect $250,000 to help pay it off. see the cnn article here.

pandora just played ‘bungle in the jungle’ – surely they can do better than that. how about something i haven’t heard a million times?

wait – i don’t think there are any tull songs i haven’t listened to a million times…

quite the appropriate bible reading this morning – 1 timothy 6.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

i don’t think i necessarily have a ‘love’ of money – just a preoccupation with it right now, as my post from last night revealed.

3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth…

yes, i’ve been guilty of that. laying down waiting to fall asleep last night i got into mental arguments with owners of other websites, and all it did was make me angry and resentful. and i think i read somewhere that ‘resentment is our number one offender’…

20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.

that verse has been thrown at me several times over the last couple of years. i guess i can’t argue that i’ve wandered from the faith, but perhaps only because i’ve wondered about the faith incessantly.

if the reading tomorrow is going to be this personal, i think i’ll stick to the newspaper…

hey – ‘mother goose’ – that’s more like it… that’s the first song tull played when i saw them at the xm radio taping for aqualung revisited. andy giddings and martin barre played recorders. i knew right then the intimate concert was going to be incredible.

and it was.

(now would you have expected me to say anything tull did wasn’t?…)

  1. Half of that $20 million dollars is owed to mulit-millionaire lobbyist Mark Penn, father of Clinton’s “Kitchen Sink Strategy” where they threw everything they could at Obama and hoped it would stick. Obama and his followers sure as shootin’ won’t give her a dime, and Hillary herself said that poor white folks who didn’t finish college voted for her instead of Obama. Maybe she can go have a tent revival / fundraiser in the mountains of West Virginia and see how that works for her.

that’s the main constituency in arkansas, right?…
